Being a public defender is a hard and thankless job. The staff members suffer from second-hand trauma and a lot of stress. Sequoyah, the Public Defender’s comfort dog has been a tremendous asset for our workforce. His calm demeanor and affection make bad days better. Our staff and other colleagues throughout the building have benefitted tremendously from his presence. In some of the more acute cases, he has assisted with people experiencing panic attacks. Just as important, however, is the fact that he brings some joy and comfort on a daily basis. He is also a great example of how this office considers the wellness of its staff a priority.
